Summerville was officially incorporated as a town in 1847. That same year, the town council passed an ordinance protecting the pine trees by making it illegal to cut them down without permission – one of the first such tree protection laws in the nation.

Due to its reputation as a health resort, Summerville became a popular retreat for those suffering from pulmonary diseases. In 1899, it was named one of the two best places in the world for treatment of lung disorders. The fresh pine-scented air attracted visitors from across the globe, fueling the town’s growth.
