The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). In accordance with this ruling, the EPA is requiring all community water systems to create an inventory of all water service lines including the type of material within their distribution system and submit that report to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH). The EPA is requiring that water systems inventory the entire water service line including that underground portion of the service line owned by the customer. Read More
Act 98 of the 2021 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature authorized the Louisiana Department of Health Safe Drinking Water Program to develop a grade for community water system accountability. The grade reflects the community water system quality and performance. Grades are based on seven (7) standards evaluating the infrastructure, accountability, and overall health risk of drinking water to consumers.
On Monday, May 1, 2023, the 2022 final grades were published on LDH’s website at https://www.ldh.la.gov/watergrade. Louisiana’s recent history of winter storms, hurricanes and pandemic responses have been a significant financial undertaking for all utilities. Louisiana Water Company (LAWCO) has been authorized to establish an Emergency Reserve Fund to ensure that the water company has the financial ability to respond to these emergencies. Another major freeze event in south Louisiana and another rash of broken customer backflow preventers (BFP) and pipes that were not properly freeze protected. During major freeze events with extended sub-freezing temperatures, it is critical that any water piping and/or water carrying devices that are above the ground be protected from freezing. During a freeze event, the water within the piping or backflow preventer can freeze and expand causing the pipe or BFP to break and result in a major water leak in the customer’s plumbing and adversely affect the water system during times of heavy demands or water use. Improper freeze protection and the resulting broken water pipes or BFP’s can mean expensive repairs or replacements of damaged equipment, significantly higher water bills and service fees, water service interruption until repairs or replacements have been completed for the customer, and, greater demand and stress on the water utility company to adequatly provide water service to the community.
