We’ll ask you if the new car replaces one that’s already on your policy when you add it.

Buying a new car is always exciting! However, it also means having to transfer your auto insurance over to the new vehicle. Thankfully, GEICO makes it simple to switch insurance coverage when you get a new ride. With just a few steps, you can update your policy online and be fully covered in your new wheels within minutes.
Why Update Your Policy?
Before driving your new vehicle off the lot, it’s crucial to get it added to your insurance policy. Here are some key reasons why:
-
Your existing policy only covers the vehicles specifically listed on it. Any new vehicles need to be added for coverage.
-
Driving uninsured is illegal. You need at least basic liability insurance before operating your new car.
-
If financing, your lender will require proof of comprehensive and collision coverage.
-
You need coverage in place immediately if your new vehicle is replacing your old one, so you’re not left without a covered auto
-
GEICO offers new car replacement coverage. But this perk only applies if the new car is added to your policy right away.
Updating your insurance ensures seamless protection on your new vehicle purchase. It just takes a few quick steps online or on the GEICO mobile app.
How to Switch Insurance to a New Car with GEICO
Switching your GEICO policy to a new vehicle is quick and painless. Here is the process:
-
Log into your GEICO account. This is easy to do online at www.geico.com or via the GEICO mobile app.
-
Go to “My Vehicles” and select “Add Replacement Vehicle.” This prompts you to enter details on the new vehicle.
-
Enter your new vehicle’s VIN. The VIN uniquely identifies the specific car. GEICO will then pre-fill much of the vehicle information.
-
Confirm remaining details like ownership, primary use, and annual mileage. Double-check that these accurately reflect the new vehicle.
-
Pick the coverage options and limits you want. This usually mirrors your old car, but you can adjust if needed.
-
Review your new quote and adjust anything that looks off. Once everything looks good…
-
Accept the changes to officially update your policy!
In most cases, the entire process takes only about 10-15 minutes. GEICO will send you updated insurance cards reflecting the new vehicle. And you can drive away knowing you and your new car are fully covered!
Tips for Switching Insurance to Your New Car
Follow these tips to ensure the insurance changeover goes smoothly:
-
Add new vehicles immediately. Don’t wait or you risk driving uninsured.
-
Keep existing coverage when possible. Changing plans when adding a car often means higher rates.
-
Beware the coverage gap. If trading in your old car, overlap coverage on both vehicles by 1-2 days to avoid a lapse.
-
Review all details like VIN, garaging address, and mileage to get an accurate new quote.
-
Carry the new insurance card in your new vehicle, along with registration and title paperwork.
-
Alert lienholders like banks if financing. They will need proof of adequate coverage.
-
Remove old vehicles promptly. Once you’ve switched primary insurance to the new car, delete unused vehicles to avoid extra premium charges.
Following these tips helps guarantee your new wheels have proper insurance protection from day one. Just take your time and carefully enter all details when updating the policy. Before long, you’ll be cruising around in your new ride fully covered by GEICO.

Depending on your situation, you may want to answer this question differently than you might expect. Let’s find out which scenario applies to you:
What if I already have my new vehicle (or I’m getting the vehicle today)?
If you already have your vehicle and are replacing one on your policy, good news! You may be able to remove your old vehicle and add your new one all at once. You can only use this option if you want to end coverage for one car on the same day that you start coverage for the new car. In this case, select an option that starts with “Yes” and choose the vehicle you plan to remove.
If you want coverage for your new car to start before or after you get rid of your old one, you will have to go through two separate transactions. To get rid of insurance coverage for a car in most states, you have to give up or transfer your license plates. You can still add your new car, though, if you choose “No” when asked if it’s to replace an existing one. When you’re ready to remove your old vehicle, go to the Remove Vehicle page and select it.
